Ingredients:
1 tin plum tomatoes
4-5 eggs
2oz (56g) grated cheese
A pinch of salt
ホールトマト缶 1
卵 4〜5個
おろしたチーズ 56g
塩ひとつまみ
Instructions:
1. Put all the ingredients in a bowl and whisk roughly. Do not overdo it. We need plum tomatoes in lumps to emulate crab meat.
2. Pour it in a shallow baking tin and cook for 30 to 40 minutes at 150-160C.

Background:
This is DH’s family recipe. According to the family legend, DH’s grandmother devised it and the recipe was introduced on a BBC radio programme. The radio programme in question could be The Kitchen Front, aired at 8.00 – 8.15 am from Monday to Saturday. The show shared cooking and housekeeping tips, including how to make rations go further and the latest information from the Ministry of Food. They introduced recipes the listeners sent to the programme, too. It was an essential listening for a lot of people before they went out and about for the day.
There seem to be variations around. I have seen a mock crab recipe with vinegar and salad cream, as well as the one with onions. When you have limited ingredients, you have to be inventive. Presumably people experimented a lot in the kitchen.
One thing to remember is that originally they used dried eggs. Although I understand the taste was not too dissimilar to the fresh counterpart, a lot of people seemed to have problems with the texture of reconstituted dried eggs. Cooking in this way would circumvent the problem.

Verdict:
Obviously the name came from the look rather than the taste. It is a simple egg recipe, with sourness coming from the tomatoes and richness from the cheese. It makes a nice sandwich filling.
戦時中に夫の祖母が作り、BBCのラジオ番組で紹介されたというレシピ。BBCでは戦時中に「The Kitchen Front」というラジオ番組があり、月曜日から土曜日まで、朝8時から8時15分まで放送いました。その中では料理や家事のヒントや、配給されて少ない食料の有効利用法や食糧省からのお知らせなどを紹介していました。リスナーが送ってきたレシピも紹介していたので、このレシピが紹介されたもの、その番組ではないかと思います。
カニもどきとはいっても、似ているのは見かけだけです。でもトマトの酸味とチーズの濃厚さが加わって、なかなかおいしいです。サンドイッチの中身としてはおすすめです。
